Muslim MLAs in Karnataka

The Congress party emerged as the single largest party with 122 seats in the 14th Karnataka Assembly elections. The party won with a thumping majority to form the government, with some of the party’s Muslim candidates winning their constituency seats. A total of 11 Muslim candidates emerged victorious, while some had to face defeat in their respective constituencies.However, at present, there are 12 Muslim MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly, with Rahim Khan winning the Bidar constituency By-elections in 2016, adding to the 10 Muslim MLAs of Congress. Iqbal Ansari of JD(S) and present MLA from Gangavathi constituency is the only non-Congress MLA out of the 12 Muslim MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly.

The 12 MLAs represent 15% of the state’s Muslim population; however, the 2013 state assembly elections saw an increase in the number of Muslim candidates winning the constituencies, as in the 2008 Karnataka Assembly elections only 9 Muslim candidates won. Congress party once again had the highest number of winning Muslim candidates with 8 victorious MLAs, while JD(S) had a lone Muslim MLA in Zameer Ahmed Khan from Chamrajpet constituency.
