In politics, age does not matter, for instance, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa, aged 86- years-old is still active in Karnataka politics. Born on 16 June 1931, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa is the oldest sitting MLA in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is serving as the Minister for Horticulture and Agro Marketing under Siddaramaiah Government. The veteran leader represents the Davangere South Assembly Constituency. Shivashankarappa is one of the finest educationalists in today‘s time in Karnataka and is also the Chairman of Bapuji Educational Association since 1972, which owns a chain of famous educational institutions and many professional institutions of higher education, including Bapuji Institute of Engineering & Technology. The Congressman is also the Chairman of other institutions like JJM Medical College, Bapuji Dental College and Hospital and College of Dental Sciences, though he has only passed higher secondary examination. Dr. Shamanur Shivashankarappa Janakalyana Trust was established in 2012, with the objective of transforming the lives of poor and backward children through education. The trust has been awarding scholarships to various economically weaker and meritorious students. Shivashankarappa is also the President of Bapuji Co-operative Bank Ltd., Davangere.
Apart from being a Congress leader, Shivashankarappa is the president of All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha, the apex body of Veerashaivas. He has served as the Treasurer of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee for the last three decades and is one of those ministers who has refused to accept the decision of Karnataka Government on giving a separate religious status to the Lingyats community. This famous educationalist is also an industrialist who owns a group of industries known as Shamanur Group with sugar and Distilleries as the prime business. This renowned cabinet minister has three children named S.S.Mallikarjun, S.S.Ganesh, S.S.Bakkesh. Of these, S.S.Mallikarjun is also an MLA representing the Davangere North Constituency. Shamanur Mallikarjun has also served as the Minister for youth and sports in the Government of Karnataka.
