B S Yeddyurappa- BJP Chief Ministerial Candidate for Karnataka

B S Yeddyurappa, got knocked off his perch, midway in his second term as Chief Minister of Karnataka in 2011, after his alleged involvement in illegal land denotification and corruption charges. B S Yeddyurappa, the man who steered Bharatiya Janata Party had a historic mandate in the 2008 Karnataka State Legislative Assembly elections and had become the first BJP CM in the southern state of India. After his resignation from the post of CM, he was succeeded by D V Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar. The second homecoming proved to be a disappointment for B S Yeddyurappa, while the first one lasted mere 7 days.

B S Yeddyurappa resigned from the BJP in 2012 along with several of his close aides, as the former CM and his colleagues felt mistreated by the BJP. He felt betrayed as the party members had distanced themselves from him during his ordeals. He then formed Karnataka Janata Paksha, which not only affected his chances of becoming the Chief Minister in 2013 Karnataka Assembly elections, but also saw BJP reducing to 40 seats in the state legislative assembly. Congress under the leadership of Siddaramaiah, won the majority quite comprehensively with 122 seats out of 224 seats in the state assembly. However, before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the “rebels” joined BJP, a move that benefited the party in the General Assembly elections and B S Yeddyurappa became MP from Shimoga Lok Sabha seat with a massive victory margin.

The upcoming state assembly elections in Karnataka presents a glorious chance for Yeddyurappa once again, as he has been chosen by the BJP as their Chief Ministerial candidate, with the backing of party President Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has been campaigning persistently over the last few months, and BJP looks forward to reducing Congress to three states, in terms of state government. Can it be a lucky third time homecoming for the former Chief Minister? This, the people of Karnataka will decide on 12th May when the state goes into polls. The results will be out on the 15th May.
