Sitting MLAs of Karnataka and their share of wealth

Karnataka is gearing up for the polls which will be held on May 12. Candidates from various political parties have begun filing their nominations. There are a total of 224 MLAs in Karnataka, (207 analyzed) out of which 193 are crorepatis which means 93% of the legislators are super rich. As per the reports of ADR, the average assets per MLA in the Karnataka Assembly Elections 2013 was nearly Rupees 24.54 crores.

Party-wise Crorepati MLAs

In the polls of 2013, Congress emerged as the single largest winning party occupying 114 out of 224 contested seats. We tried to analyze the wealth of 207 sitting MLAs ( as we have data for only 207), we see Congress has the largest number of crorepati MLAs.

On analyzing, according to the respective parties we obtained -

Congress- As per statistics, out of 114 sitting MLAs of INC, 109 are crorepatis which states that 96% legislators of INC possess assets worth at least ten million rupees.

BJP- BJP, the runners-up in the 2013 elections, was able to secure 40 seats in the Karnataka Assembly polls. 36 out of 40 MLAs from BJP are crorepatis which amounts to 90% of the sitting MLAs.

JD(S)- Janata Dal (Secular) secured 35 seats in the previous elections. 33 out of 35 MLAs from JD(S) have assets of worth more than one crore.

KJP- All 4 (100%) MLAs of KJP are crorepatis.

BSRC- 2 out of 3 MLAs from BSRC are crorepatis.

KMP and SP- Both MLAs of their respective party have assets worth more than one crore.

Independent- 7 out of 9 independent MLAs are crorepatis.

Top 5 richest sitting MLAs of Karnataka

The Congress Party is in power in the state of Karnataka and has 114 sitting members in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The top 5 richest MLAs in the list are all from the ruling Congress party.

Priya Krishna- Priya Krishna, the elder son of MLA and Housing Minister Sri M Krishnappa, is one of the youngest MLAs in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and represents Govindarajanagar constituency. This Congressman possess total assets of worth 910 Crores out of which he has immovable assets worth 95 crores.

N.Nagaraju [M.T.B] – N. Nagaraju, who represents Hosakote constituency, (Bangalore Rural) possess total assets of worth 470 Crores.

Anil H Lad- Anil H Lad is a leader of the Congress party who was once arrested because of the illegal iron ore mining scam. The CBI is still investigating the case under the orders of Supreme Court. This former Rajya Sabha member represents Bellary city constituency and is the third richest sitting MLA of Karnataka with assets of worth 288 crores.

D.K.Shivakumar – D.K.Shivakumar is amongst the most controversial ministers of the Congress and is currently serving as the Minister of Energy in the Government of Karnataka. Shivakumar features as the fourth richest incumbent minister in our list. This Congressman came into limelight when a raid was carried at his office and residence in Bengaluru on 2nd August which lasted for three days. An undisclosed amount of nearly 300 crore rupees was recovered. Currently, his total assets are of worth 251 Crores.

Santhosh Lad- Santhosh Lad is currently serving as the Minister of Information and Infrastructure under the Government of Karnataka. He represents Kalagatagi constituency and was re-elected as an MLA of the same constituency in 2013. Lad comes from one of the oldest families in the mining business and holds assets of worth 186 crore rupees.

Value of assets and number of MLAs

On analyzing the value of assets possessed by the 207 current MLAs, we see that there are 108 sitting MLAs who have assets of worth five crores and more which means total 52 percent members in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly are moneyed. There are 52 current MLAs who possessed a wealth of more than two crores. 45 existing MLAs have assets of worth more than 50 lakhs and only 1 % have less than the above-mentioned statistics.
